The Art of Secret Shadows: Inside MetaZoo’s Darkest Set Yet

Casters,

MetaZoo Monday this week may have been focused on art, but that didn’t stop it from offering intriguing insights into how the game’s visuals are crafted and what fans can expect from the upcoming Secret Shadows set. With art directors and community members weighing in, we got a rare glimpse at the philosophy guiding MetaZoo’s spookiest release to date.

How MetaZoo Artwork Comes to Life

Brad Thompson, one of the art directors at GameQbator Labs, explained how much detail goes into each piece of artwork before it ever reaches the players’ hands.

It varies from piece to piece. It’s a multi step process. We review at every stage of development. Checking against the original brief and concept sent to the artist and the work reflects the game mechanics, name of the card and creative throughline for the card set. All of this addition to checking against our reference materials and brand guidelines.

This reveals a deliberate system designed not just to create cool artwork but to ensure consistency across the brand. Every brush stroke is tied to game mechanics and storytelling. That approach helps explain why Secret Shadows already feels so cohesive, even in its early previews.

Staying Scary within Boundaries

Naturally, with a darker-themed set, questions arose about how far MetaZoo is willing to push the boundaries. The conversation turned to whether Secret Shadows might tread beyond the PG-13 territory that MetaZoo has long adhered to.

We like staying in the PG13 lane. This may be an unpopular opinion- but I think parameters help creativity.

Instead of using shock value or gratuitous gore, the creative team finds ways to amplify horror within set guidelines.

I would say we pushed boundaries in ways that best serve the IP, the audience and our characters. We didn’t try to push edginess just for the sake of doing it.

The decision to hold the line on content ratings speaks to a careful balancing act. By leaning into “goo over blood” or “monster skulls instead of human skulls,” the art team can explore disturbing imagery without alienating younger players or straying from MetaZoo’s identity. It suggests a strategy where limitations sharpen rather than stifle creativity.

The impression left by this week’s Q&A is that Secret Shadows represents more than just another set release. It is an intentional marriage of childhood horror, folklore, and careful creative discipline. With the art team’s process laid bare and hints of new mechanics on the horizon, players have plenty of reasons to be excited when the shadows finally lift.
